ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering was established inthe year 2006 in Nehru Institute of Engineering and Technology with a commitmentof providing the state-of-art technical education to the future technocrats throughDedicated and quality faculties carrying out an excellent teaching and learning process with excellent laboratory facilities and smart classrooms. The ECE program compiles the communication engineering and electronics engineering which forms the platform for the emerging fastest communication techniques and lightning speed processing applications respectively.

The department of ECE offers one Under Graduate program (B.E.) in Electronics and Communication Engineering and one Post Graduate program (M.E.) in Communication Systems. The department was started with a student intake of 60 and current intake is 90 students for UG and 18 students for PG courses respectively. The faculty team of ECE department is comprised of eminent faculties from diverse area of specializations such as Wireless Communication, Mobile Communication, Wireless Networks, Wireless Sensor Networks, Communication Systems, Applied Electronics, Signal Processing, Image Processing, VLSI & Embedded Systems Design. The students can experience real practical learning through the well-equipped practical laboratories like Communication Lab, Microprocessor Lab, Electronics circuit Lab, Microwave Lab, Digital Circuits Lab, Microwave and Optical Communication Lab, Computer Networks Lab, VLSI Lab and Advanced Communication Lab. Department of ECE provides a great learning experience platform where students are transformed in to a skilled individual in all aspects required by the next generation industries (Industry 4.0) and imparted with all ethics and human values to mould them into true citizens.

  • To inculcate professional ethics and moral values among the students.
  • To impart industrial and managerial skills to promote self-employment and adapt to appropriate technology to meet the challenges arising out of global demand.

1.TI Powered Analog Electronics Lab

The Analog Electronics lab in the department of ECE is powered by the Texas Instruments ASLK PRO University Kit where students can experience the real time performance of analog circuits.

Analog systems are extensively used in the applied spaces like automotive, medical and motor control electronics. The analog functional building blocks are used to design the front end and the back end subsystems in these application areas for a variety of specifications. There is a greater need in the industry for application engineers who can judiciously use the analog integrated circuits (ICs) to design efficient analog systems rather than IC design engineers who design the analog ICs.

ASLK PRO University Kit comes with three general-purpose operational amplifiers (TL082) and three wide-bandwidth precision analog multipliers (MPY634) from Texas Instruments. We have also included two 12-bit parallel-input multiplying digital-to-analog converters DAC7821, a wide-input non-synchronous buck-type DC/DC controller TPS40200, and a low dropout regulator TPS7250 from Texas Instruments. A portion of ASLK PRO is left for general-purpose prototyping which can be used for carrying out mini-projects.

The experiments included with the ASLK PRO kit cover the design of all important analog systems used in electronics, each with well-defined measurements and analysis towards specific learning.

On performing all the experiments enabled by ASLK PRO students will learn:

  • Characteristics and specification of analog ICs
  • How to decide which ICs to use for a given specification
  • How to perform basic fault diagnosis of an electronic system

2.ElectronicCircuits and Devices Lab

The Electronic Circuits and Devices lab provides the foundation of electronics engineering. This lab aims at providing students the knowledge about various electronic devices. Students are made familiar with electronic circuits and their intended use in various applications. This Laboratory is primarily aimed to meet the requirements of practical work meant for Active Components basic analysis, designing and testing of Amplifier and Oscillators .All basic Electronic devices and their characteristics, applications can be studied. Using these devices the small electronic circuits can be constructed and can be checked.

The Electronics lab is concerned with basic knowledge and technology needed to understand and participate in the development and application of the rapidly changing electronics and communication field. The various experiments are done with Function Generator, Single Trace and Dual Trace CRO's designed to provide breadth and depth of knowledge as the basis for quality education that helps each student to keep pace with the enormously changing professional and academic needs.

Students are encouraged to design and implement circuits that can be used for their Projects and other applications.

In Advanced CommunicationLab the students are exposed to the microwave active devices like klystron, gunn diode and passive devices like isolator, circulator, slotted section, directional coupler, reflectometer, magic tee, horn antenna, attenuator and terminations. Satellite communication demonstration kits are also available. The power meter, frequency meter, VSWR meter are available for microwave signal parameter measurements

5.Embedded System Lab

An embedded system is a special-purpose system in which the computer is completely encapsulated by the device it controls. Unlike a general-purpose computer, such as a personal computer, an embedded system performs pre-defined tasks, usually with very specific requirements. Since the system is dedicated to a specific task, design engineers can optimize it, reducing the size and cost of the product. Embedded systems are often mass-produced, so the cost savings may be multiplied by millions of items.

This lab is concerned with training the students in Embedded based electronic systems design by software computation and hardware implementation. The lab is equipped with 30Personal Desktop computers with multimedia. This lab also enables students to their projects in the field Embedded Systems, Electronic simulation, Real Time systems & Software development. This lab is connected to the Internet, which enables the students to access the online resources and get in touch with the latest technologies.

7.Advanced Communication System Design Lab

Advanced Communication System ( ACS ) Laboratory covers design and verification of the concepts of modern communication systems that operates in MHz-THz range. The main focus of the Advanced Communication System (ACS) Laboratory is to design next-generation wireless technologies and mobile computing systems.This lab is equipped with oscilloscopes, Function Generators, Modules for Digital Modulation and Demodulation techniques and power supply units. To enhance precise measurement and observe waveform with better clarity Digital Storage Oscilloscopes are used.

The Microwave test benches are used to conduct experiments in GHz frequency range. Various digital coding and modulation kits are used apart from discrete components to demonstrate the basic concepts involved in digitalcommunication. In particular, ACS Laboratory conducts research in the broad area of communication theory, wireless communications and networks, with focus on the physical layer and optical communication systems – Optical fiber based and integrated photonic waveguides based.

This laboratory houses the hardware which includes 8085 Microprocessor trainer kits, 8086 Microprocessor trainer kits, 8051 Microcontroller trainer kits, interfacing cards and software Keil-51. This laboratory provides hand-on experience to interface I/O devices, perform A/D and D/A conversions, design digital clock, traffic light control system etc., The features and facilities available in this laboratory helps the students to do their projects and enhance their knowledge on the latest trends and technologies. 9.Cadence Powered VLSI Lab

The VLSI laboratory is well equipped with the most up-to-date industry standard VLSI EDA tools and hardware resources like Xilinx 12.1, Cadence EDA toolSpartan3 FPGA, Spartan3A video starter kit, VirtexE FPGA, Virtex4 FPGA, Virtex5 FPGA and CPLD. The laboratory provides hands-on experience to students in the field of analog and digital circuit design to conduct world class research. The laboratory is designed to expose the students to a set of tools for CMOS design, starting with SPICE circuit simulation and leading to physical layout, design rule checking, and extracted circuit simulation. Students gain knowledge in using EDA tools to design, simulate, and verify schematics and layout of logic gates. It also serves to facilitate design and implementation of digital design on FPGA.

Cadence is the only software which has industry standard tools for the entire VLSI flow.Starting from Concept to the Tap out (IC fabrication). Cadence has bothCustom IC and Semi-Custom IC tools (Analog and Digital tools) which will enable thestudents to acquire the knowledge of VLSI flow. Most of the Cadence tools are Signoff toolswhich are used in most of the industries.The students will acquire knowledge on Industry standard tools. The students will understand the VLSI subjects in depth.

11. Computer Networks Lab

The Computer Network Laboratory in the Department of ECE is designed for the Undergraduate students to have familiarize with the experiment relating the broad area of communication networks and systems, and emphasis on theory, architecture, modeling, performance analysis, mutli-access, mobility, routing and switching protocols, It also helps the students to be familiarize with the current areas of research focus include routing and path computation and optimal resource allocation in wireless networks, and high performance computer networks and applications. The laboratory equips with network systems, designed for the students to learn the concepts of the communication technologies in LANs and WANs & in routing and switching. Software’s are installed in the laboratory which allows the students to learn how to design and manage some typical medium size to large network systems.

Packet Tracer is a cross-platform visual simulation tool designed by Cisco Systems that allows users to create network topologies and imitate modern computer networks. The software allows users to simulate the configuration of Cisco routers and switches using a simulated command line interface

PLACEMENT TRAINING AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Symbiosis between placement cell and the Department help the students to achieve the best of the Jobs of their careers. Proper Industrial interaction is given to the students by organizing workshops, In-plant training, Industrial Visits in the Campus. Symposium, workshops, expert lectures, project contest are few of the events organized by the Department in the past years. In these events eminent personalities from industry and educational institutions were invited to the campus for student’s interaction and guidance. The students had presented their talents in the form of practical projects and papers, which were seen and assessed by the invited personalities; they also had an interaction directly with the students in which they suggested measures to further improve the quality of the creativity.

INDUSTRIAL INTERNSHIP ARRANGED FOR STUDENTS

Exposure as well as training is provided to the students for advanced studies and various guest lecturers and Mock campus interviews are conducted time to time to facilitate the students and create awareness. The Department has signed MOUs with various organizations to provide real time training to the students in the field.Industry visits and practical projects are also encouraged by the department in various sectors, students are taken out to industries for practical understanding of the technology.
